Important information regarding smart cell phone and GPS devices:
Very few of our NY clubs' snowmobile trails have been GPSed as of this time. This means that the trails you are viewing in the interactive web map and that are available for download to your mobile device are a representation of their exact location. Please do not try to precisely navigate along these trails. Furthermore, all snowmobile trails listed below have been slightly simplified so they can be used on mobile devices. Data points making up the trail segments have been reduced at a threshold of 40 feet (no more than one data point every 40 feet). The business locations are more accurate and have been located using a combination of New York State E911 street centerline data and NAVTEQ data.
Be sure to check the table displaying all clubs' trails, trail update information, number of GPS tracks and cell phone zones before purchasing.

Cell phone users:
If you can run Google Maps Mobile on your cell phone, you can download the region's snowmobile trails, sponsoring businesses and parking locations and add them to your map on your phone.
You must try out the sample file provided below before purchasing files, there are no refunds.
iPhone users only: Download this file to your computer's harddrive: ohiorr.kml (left click on link, then Save the file, do not open it). Then print out and follow these instructions: iPhone_instructions.pdf.
All other phones Step 1: Be sure you can run Google Maps Mobile on your phone. From your phone, go to http://m.google.com/maps. Follow the instructions. If desired, you can allow the application to locate you on the map. This is not GPS technology, Google uses cell phone tower locations. It still works pretty well though.
Step 2: Try out this sample file to be sure you can view the trails and businesses/parking on your map.
Ohio Ridge Riders trails (Herkimer County), with 5 businesses and 2 parking locations, available at http://www.nysnowmobilewebmap.com/kml/ohiorr.kml
**Important: from Google Maps Mobile on your phone, select Search from the menu and enter the complete URL as given above, all lowercase. You will be able to view the trails and businesses all together. Using the menu on your phone, you can list all the businesses/parking, then zoom right to a particular one. All snowmobile trails (corridor, secondary, local) display in the same color.

GPS Users:
You can also download the snowmobile trails, sponsoring businesses and parking locations to your recreation grade GPS receiver (Garmin, Magellan, DeLorme, etc). The trails have been reformatted as tracks. The businesses & parking locations are waypoints.
Please take our quick 5 question survey, so we can best meet your needs regarding tracks and background maps for your receiver.

You must be familiar with your receiver's limitations. Be sure you know how many tracks and points your receiver's memory can hold. Many units are still limited to only 10 tracks. Review the trail information in the table if necessary. If you want a club's trails with more than 10 tracks, you will need to remove a few tracks in your software before uploading the tracks to your unit.
You must try the sample track and waypoint files below on your unit before purchasing, there are no refunds.
Step 1. You will need software on your PC that lets you download AND UPLOAD your waypoints, routes and tracks. If needed, EasyGPS is a free program that communicates with numerous makes & models of receivers.
Step 2. Download these two sample files to test capability. Either left click on the link, then save the file to your hard drive after it opens, or right click on the link and select Save Target As. Be sure the .gpx file extension displays in the file name. The file type should be "All files" or "GPS exchange file".
ohioridger: the Ohio Ridge Riders trails in Herkimer County (from earlier this fall. contains 9 tracks)
bizpark: businesses and parking locations in the region
Files are NAD83 datum, UTM Zone 18N coordinate system. You can also bring these files into Google Earth. |
